FAQ

Where are these raised beds made?

Fir wood is a special wood that looks like a pine tree. This type of wood is commonly found in the Pacific Northwest, but the softwood species are most popular in North America.

Fir is impeccably straight and thick, it doesn’t decay easily, shrink or bend. The wood has a beautiful texture and pleasant fragrance, making it an ideal choice for housing, furniture, outdoor cladding, and even gardening.

Can you connect ECOgardener’s raised bed into a longer box?

The ECOgardener Raised Garden Bed is created like a box with a tongue and groove assembly. Only the middle two posts have the groove on three sides to connect the two boxes. If you had two complete sets, you could make it three boxes long since you'll have an additional two posts with the three grooves. However, you wouldn't be able to connect all four together.

What do I put on the bottom of a raised garden bed?

It is important to put something on the bottom of the raised garden to prevent weeds and grass from growing and destroying your plants. Gardeners put landscape fiber to line the bottom of the raised garden bed. It is a kind of fiber that is specially made from recycled materials, such as polyester and linen. The landscape fiber contains various holes to ensure that there is proper drainage for the soil.

In addition, landscape fiber is durable and can last for almost 10 years. Not only that, but it is also environment-friendly, so you don’t have to worry that it can bring adverse effects to the surroundings.

Do raised garden beds need drainage?

The answer is YES. All gardening must have proper drainage to ensure the healthy growth of the plants. Poor drainage can cause water to pool at the roots or make the soil waterlogged. This can cause your plants to drown and die.

Raised gardens need special drainage to enhance the growth of the plants. There are various ways on how you can give your raised garden beds a good drainage. You can add compost to the raised beds, use soil amendments, utilize sheet composting, use mulch, or add cover crops. If you’re using a landscape filter, make sure that it has holes to ensure quality drainage.

How deep should a raised planter box be?

Typically, a raised bed does not need to be very deep or shallow. For some plants, a 6-8” deep planter box is enough. For some other plants, an 8-12” deep planter box is preferred.

Keep in mind that the depth of the plant box may differ for some plants and vegetables. Crops like beets, broccoli, lettuce, turnips, and onions can successfully grow in an 8”-deep box. However, vegetables like cabbage and other vegetables may require a deeper planter box. Tomatoes, for instance, need a minimum of 12” beneath so that their roots will have enough room to grow.

To make sure that the plant’s roots will have ample space for growing, always leave a space of 2 inches on the root’s side as well as 6 inches on the bottom.

Which is better: metal or wood raised garden bed?

Today’s gardening innovations have brought new amazing tools and processes. When it comes to raised garden beds, metal and wood are the most popular materials used.

Some gardeners choose metal garden beds for they look more modern and durable. In fact, they can last up to 20 years and require minimal maintenance. On the other hand, wood is more preferred for garden raised beds because of its wonderful customizable features, availability, and reasonable pricing. It’s ideal for large-sized raised garden beds, too.

Our ECOgardener raised beds offer plants more room to grow. Whether gardeners plan to grow herbs, vegetables, or fruits, these durable open-bottom frames are perfect! They can support the plants from growing successfully from seedling to harvest.

Our raised garden beds are also space-savers since they can be conveniently stacked on top of each other for an awesome tiered garden look.

What soil do you put in raised garden beds?

The kind of soil you will put in raised garden beds or any containers greatly matters. To grow healthy plants, gardeners should also choose fertile soil. Usually, experts will advise to use 60% topsoil, 30% compost, and mix with 10% potting soil.

It is always a great idea to use compost since all organic matter is essential for growing healthy plants. They aid in holding moisture and providing nutrients to the plants. If your soil is mixed with compost, it can be the best soil for raised garden beds.

When purchasing from a soil delivery, make sure to know where the soil comes from. It is important to know if it contains the essential nutrients. Check the labels and look for contents like herb mix, organic vegetables, flowers, and organic garden soil.
