Can I put landscape fabric over weeds?

Yes, you can. A landscape fabric, also known as weed fabric, serves as a thin barrier to weeds. This material is porous, so it allows water, air, and other nutrients to be consumed by garden plants. It’s actually a recommended solution for perennial beds since this fabric can last five years and more.

It is important to clean the surface and remove the weeds beneath the fabric before installing it. Gardeners or landscapers usually perform light weeding after installing the landscape fabric. The landscaping fabric is spread over the bare soil around shrubs, trees, and other plants. This often overlaps some inches of the fabric material at the seams.

When choosing the top-notch landscaping fabric, make sure to look for the ones made from heavy-duty material – woven polypropylene. Check also if the fabric is treated with ultraviolet to ensure durability and longevity.

What is landscaping fabric used for?

A landscaping fabric is designed mainly to help control weeds in the garden, landscapes, planting beds, patios, and under decks filtration, save on mulching, and ward off weeds from growing.

Specifically, landscaping fabric is used for the following:

Environment-friendly weed prevention: Instead of using chemicals, which we all know can be harmful to the environment, landscaping fabric is safer and effective in preventing weed growth.

Stabilization. If you aim to add a layer of stability to decks, gravel paths, and pavers, landscaping fabrics can be a big help. Landscapers will not have to worry about gravel being trampled into the garden or pavers from sinking into the soil.

Retaining of Moisture and Conservation: The porosity of the landscape fabric allows the water and air to go through it, preventing moisture from evaporating quickly from its surface.

When should you use landscape fabric?

The primary idea behind landscape fabric usage is that it can totally eliminate weed growth in the garden or landscape designs. Nowadays, this innovative material serves as a crucial tool used to stabilize soil, aid in mulching, retain moisture, and promote proper aeration.

You can use landscape fabric if you want to add a layer of protection to your foundation drip edges and pathways. You can also place it in raised beds or between planting rows.

You can use landscape fabric before planting so that you will suppress the weeds first. It will allow you to cut the proper size of holes in the soil, thus, avoiding damaging the plants when the fabric is laid out. Make sure that the edges of the fabric will be a minimum of 4” from your plant base.

Is landscape fabric the same as filter fabric?

Landscape fabric and filter fabric are sometimes deemed to have similar functions. However, they are completely two different products.

Landscape fabric is designed for landscape and garden projects, while filter fabric is usually used in construction and drainage processes.

Landscape fabric lets proper irrigation and aeration in the soil. In that way, plants, especially those with a sensitive root system, are protected from drying out. One limitation of the landscape fabric is that it degrades its quality due to light and age. The fabric needs to be replaced after five years.

On the other hand, filter fabric lets the water flow and, at the same time, filter out silt, sediments, dirt, and other substances. This type of fabric should be heavy-duty to ensure efficient functioning.

Which side goes down on landscape fabric?

There are various types of landscape fabric. In most of those types, the felted side goes down, while the shiny one goes up. This pattern must be followed to ensure that the fabric will slightly stick to the soil and minimize sliding. Besides, the felted side aids water to penetrate through the fabric and into the soil.

A quick reminder: If you are going to use woven landscape fabric, feel both sides of the fabric, and you’ll notice a subtle difference. One side will have a fuzzy feel, while the other side will be smooth to touch. Keep in mind that the fuzzy side should be down and touch the soil. This side will also grip the debris and dirt to keep the landscape fabric stable in place.

Does water penetrate landscape fabric?

Yes, it does. Landscape fabric is designed to create a physical, water-permeable barrier that will allow the right amount of water to go through it. At the same time, it minimizes water evaporation from the soil. The fabric’s holes are small enough to warp off the water from passing in large amounts and soak the soil.

Typically, landscape fabric is made from woven fibers or a solid sheet containing perforated holes to let water penetrate. Other brands of landscape fabric provide UV protection to keep the fabric from early damage.

The felted side of the landscape fabric aids water to pass through the fabric. Even if you lay the fabric upside down, water and moisture can still penetrate, however, at a slower rate. In some cases, both sides of the landscape fabric are the same. In such instances, either side can go against the soil.
